Explorium of Lexington
Project Type: Museum Exhibit/Specialty Décor
Design: Dwight Kelly, Corman and Associates
When the Explorium of Lexington outlined their new exhibit of the horse, they decided to educate patrons on not only the physiology of horses and the intricacies of Central Kentucky’s horse industry, but also on the geology of the Bluegrass region that make it the prime location for equine operations. The challenge was to show the make up of the land both above and below ground with all of the interactive components to make it both fun and educational. And, this had to be done in materials that kids could handle, sit on, climb into, etc. The result was a faux stone fence and entry gate mimicking one of our many magnificent horse farms. The 40” diameter oak tree’s canopy covers an area 30’ x 30’ with a trunk that is fit around a column and holds an oversized 20 page book detailing the history of horses in Kentucky in both English and Spanish.
There is also a cave entrance kids climb through with flashlights and hard hats to learn about the unique limestone cartography and subterranean water flow that allow Kentucky to be the Horse Capital of the World.
